A team of fire officials were on the scene of the Makiki fire as the number grew quickly. Hawaii County firefighters were on the first line of defense to extinguish the fire by pumping fire retardant, water and air into the flames, Chu said.
On Wednesday afternoon, there were numerous calls reporting the blaze was growing and that people on the ground were being evacuated.
No injuries were reported, Chu said. The fire originated at the Pacific Beach Park where it appeared that someone was setting off firecrackers from a firework lighter.
