Top seed Daniil Medvedev beaten by Nick Kyrgios at US Open 2017
In a stunning upset, Nick Kyrgios of Australia beat Daniil Medvedev of Russia at a pivotal moment in the semi-finals of the US Open to claim a spot in his first Grand Slam final and the fourth of his career.
The Russian player started off brilliantly with a magnificent backhand down the line, which sliced through Medvedev and then bounced across the net to complete the first point of the match.
Barely 3 minutes later, Medvedev produced a sublime drop shot winner and this time it went out of bounds, leaving Kyrgios with the chance to make it 4-1 and take the contest into a deciding set.
Kyrgios was playing in his first major tournament since winning a gold medal at the Rio Olympics, and so perhaps he was nervous.
Medvedev produced a beautiful drop shot winner in the next game, but Kyrgios was not finished yet, delivering a forehand winner down the line and then netting a forehand winner of his own to secure the first set.
Just over a minute later, Medvedev produced an incredible forehand winner of his own to reduce Kyrgios to 12-all and it was only then the Russian looked a little concerned with an underwhelming first serve.
Kyrgios started again brilliantly, producing a magnificent down the line down the line pass and it sliced through Medvedev to complete the second point.
With 5 points already on serve, the first serve deficit was now too much for Medvedev and Kyrgios took a 5-3 lead in the set.
The Russian player missed his first serve in the second set, hitting only 11 slices to Kyrgios’ 13, but he then struck back, smashing a forehand winner down the line and then nailing a backhand winner from there to take the second set.
Both players played solidly in the third set, with Kyrgios particularly dominating. He
