The Women’s World Cup victory finally made a difference to the MLS playoffs. And the USWNT is a force to be reckoned with.
The Women’s World Cup, a competition which the USWNT has entered every two years since 1999, is a celebration of sport at its purest. It is a celebration of women coming together and expressing their inherent abilities. No longer are women in the world made, just as much as their football was born, by their male counterparts, but by their female counterparts. And in this way, the Women’s World Cup comes at the same time as the Women’s World Cup — it has everything to do with them.
The USWNT is the US team, and its greatest triumphs come from the women’s team. As much as the men’s team represents the United States, women’s team is the most representative of what the US is all about. It is a representation of a people as a team, in action, in solidarity.
The history of the USWNT is as illustrious and varied as its players, but what unites them as an individual is their sheer ability and effort. At one time or another, the USWNT has won all of the major tournament stages. As much of a team as the men’s team is, the women have the same history. Their legacy is not the product of the team itself, because the USWNT has created its own.
In 2004, the USWNT made history when they became the first and most successful team to win all three of its major tournaments. In the 2016 championship, the USWNT won all three major competitions to claim the most prestigious title in Women’s soccer history.
